Our South Lake Tahoe Drop-In Center is one component of the Basic Center Program. It provides supportive services for youth to come and get necessities such as food, clothing and hygiene, showers, laundry and ID's. This program implements positive alternatives for runaway, homeless and street youth by improving their immediate and ongoing safety, well-being, self-sufficiency and permanent connections.
Tahoe Youth & Family Service's Basic Center Program focuses around a Comprehensive Youth Services Model and provides a full continuum of services including a 24-hour crisis line; gateway services; crisis intervention services; assessment; coordinated case management; individual, and family counseling; emergency temporary shelter via Host Homes and safe alternative placements; and after-care services. Tahoe Youth & Family Services integrates positive youth development and preventative services strategies into our culture of care by embracing harm-reduction and trauma-informed approaches in order to assist runaway, homeless and street youth in achieving safe, stable living arrangements and self-sufficiency.
Between 10/01/2019 through 9/30/2020 we gave out 223 food assistance cards totaling $7,525 to youth and families; 96 outreach kits that included hygiene supplies, hand sanitizer, and face masks were distributed to high-risk youth and families. The Drop-In Center had 73 visits, distributed 61 bags of food, 47 hygiene kits, 38 pairs of socks, 24 showers, 75 loads of laundry and 26 clothing items were given out.
“I was trying to get into college; Tahoe Youth & Family Services is the only reason I was able to prove residency since I am homeless. They helped me with the application process. Without them I would not be able to attend college.”
